Bits, bytes, and what your plan means
How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?
Divide by 8. A megabit is one eighth of a megabyte, so a 400 Mbps connection moves at most 50 megabytes per second.
Why is my download speed lower than my internet plan?
Plans are sold in megabits per second while download meters usually show megabytes per second, which reads 8 times smaller. A 800 Mbps plan showing 100 MB/s in a download window is performing exactly as sold.
Is 1000 Mbps the same as 1 Gbps?
Yes. 1 Gbps equals 1000 Mbps, which is 125 megabytes per second at most.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB is decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) and MiB is binary (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes). Networks and storage vendors quote decimal; some operating systems report binary, which is why the same file can show two slightly different sizes.
